There is no universally agreed upon definition of what differentiates a luxury hotel from, for example, an upper upscale hotel. As hotels have started to focus not just on amenities but also the overall customer experience, the lines between different hotel tiers have become increasingly blurred. Many hotels that aren’t top of the market use the word ‘luxury’ for marketing purposes, further complicating the matter. There may also be regional differences in standards. As such, any categorization of luxury hotels is somewhat arbitrary, but will generally be designed to capture the hotels which provide the best in amenities, customer service, design and overall customer experience. As of May 2022, U.S. and Canadian hotel guests rated The Ritz Carlton as the best luxury hotel, with an overall score of 885 out of 1,000.
