Georgia Power, along with various other companies like Gulf Power, is owned by Southern Company. The company began operations in the early 20th century as the industrial sector grew and thus, the demand for electricity started to increase. It was initially established as the Georgia Railway and Power Company to consolidate streetcar lines and their generating plants. Today, the Georgia Power Company owns and operates about 44 electricity generating plans, including hydroelectric dams, fossil-fuel generation plants and nuclear power plants.

In 2018, the Atlanta-based electricity provider generated approximately 8.4 billion U.S. dollars in revenue. In the same year, the number of employees decreased from 7,527 in 2016 to around 6,967 in 2018. With sales amounting to about 85 terawatt hours of electricity , Georgia Power was ranked second among the leading electric utilities in the United States.
