In 2017, the Atlanta-based electricity provider generated approximately 8.3 billion U.S. dollars in revenue. In the same year, the number of employees decreased from 7,527 in 2016 to around 6,986 in 2017. With sales amounting to about 85 terawatt hours of electricity , Georgia Power was ranked second among the leading electric utilities in the United States.
The massive potential of solar energy has sparked the interest of Georgia Power in the past years. Generating electricity from sunlight is one of the most common renewable and low-carbon resources. According to Citigroup figures, the world’s demand for solar photovoltaic (PV) power is expected to total over 110 gigawatts by 2022. Georgia Power was amongst the ten leading U.S. utilities for solar energy in 2016, with nearly 553 megawatts of new capacity installations. The utility company actively supports the research and development of solar energy and announced that it will continue to increase their renewable energy portfolio.
