Transport industry in Romania - Statistics & Facts

Inland freight transportation in Romania amounted to more than 82 billion tonne-kilometers in 2017. Annual freight volumes had mostly recovered from a noticeable slump in the recession and were almost at the same level as 2006. Of inland transportation systems, most goods had been moved via roads that year. Figures echoed the development of overall freight traffic and had increased in the past years to reach 54.7 billion tonne-kilometers by 2017.

Roads were also the most common mode of transport for passengers travelling on land through the country, with cars being used the most often at 75 percent. All roads in Romania had a combined length of 86,080 kilometers.
High road usage raised the requirements of the government to increase spending on infrastructure. The largest sum was invested in 2011 at nearly 3.3 billion euros, before decreasing the following years to 2.4 billion euros in 2016. In 2016, overall investments in inland transport infrastructure made up 1.7 percent of Romania’s GDP.

Regarding household expenditure on transportation, in 2016 final consumption amounted to 11.1 billion euros, of which roughly two billion had been spent on the purchase of personal transport equipment e.g. cars. In 2017, Romanians had bought more than 130,000 new passenger cars, while the overall number of such vehicles registered in the country approximated 5.5 million.
