New passenger cars sales in Romania from 2005-2023
The annual sales of passenger cars in Romania decreased from approximately 215,000 units in 2005 to 82,800 units in 2014. Car sales then went on rising to about 142,791 units in 2023. Other vehicles which recorded an increase in sales were tractors. By 2019, the number of tractors sold in Romania more than doubled compared to 2010.
Road vehicle registrations
In 2019, the total number of road vehicles registered in Romania was 8,749,390. Out of the total number, approximately seven million were cars, while 148,390 were mopeds and motorcycles. Moreover, from January to June 2020, there were already 231,098 new car registrations in Romania and more than 15 thousand trailers and semi-trailers.
Automotive industry
In 2018, the leading company in the automotive industry in Romania was Renault Commercial Roumanie, with a turnover of over four million Romanian lei, followed by Porsche Romania and Mercedes-Benz Romania. At the same time, relevant for the Romanian automotive industry is the car manufacturer, Dacia, which takes its name from the famous historic region. The company began its activity in 1966 and was sold 33 years later by the Romanian Government to the French car manufacturer, Renault, remaining a subsidiary.
