This in turn boosts job creation, the economy, and other socioeconomic elements.

Benefits from Austria's high infrastructure quality

Austria ticks several boxes with regard to quality transport infrastructure and has been positively ranked for certain aspects of its transport industry. When it comes to the efficiency of its railroad services, Austria currently sits at number ten globally, behind its European counterparts Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Spain – and the country also occupies fourth place worldwide in terms of rail-related patents. Austria was furthermore ranked number ten in the world for the quality of its roads and is additionally a leading nation in the manufacture of cable car vehicle designs.

Austria’s key players

There are just under 40,000 companies in Austria’s transport industry, which employ over 200,000 employees in total. Leading companies to note are Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB), Austrian Airlines, and LKW Walter. In terms of passenger transport, Austria’s busiest airports include Vienna, Innsbruck, and Salzburg, although Vienna welcomes over sixteen times as many passengers annually as Austria’s other airports. Austrian Airlines, the country’s national airline and a Lufthansa subsidiary, was rated ninth in the world out of the best airlines according to an index based on various factors, including punctuality, quality of service, and complaint handling.

Austria’s incumbent national rail operator, ÖBB, transports an average of over 450 million passengers a year on its services and achieved a punctuality rate of 96 percent on its rail services, thus ranking among the most reliable rail operators in Europe. However, at over 70 percent, transport via passenger car dominates the modal split in Austria, with little competition from other transport modes. When it comes to the transportation of goods, road freight transport also dominates the modal split at around 80 percent.

Austria’s freight transportation and logistics companies are globally renowned for their experience and organization. As mentioned previously, Vienna ranks as Austria’s strongest-performing airport for passenger transport, and the same goes for air freight transport. Furthermore, Austrian rail logistics and transportation companies are ideally located at the core of four out of nine of Europe’s powerful core rail network corridors: Scandinavian-Mediterranean, Baltic-Adriatic, Orient/East-Med, and Alpine-Western Balkan.
