Pork in the United Kingdom - statistics & facts

After slaughtering and processing, pig meat is consumed in the form of ham, sausages, bacon, and many other meat products. To supply the nation with pork products, about 5.19 million pigs were kept on agricultural holdings in the United Kingdom. In 2022, the production value of pigs and pigmeat in the UK reached a new high of over 1.7 billion British pounds, an increase of over 50 percent when compared to a decade earlier.

Pork production

The UK slaughtered over 11.2 million clean pigs in 2022. Only a small amount of total pork demand in the United Kingdom is covered by the slaughter of organic pigs. A total of 35,000 slaughtered animals qualified for the UK's organic label in the same year. National pork production is supplemented by imports of about 322,000 metric tons of pork annually. Comparatively, the UK exported around 334,000 metric tons of pork in 2022, a figure which has decreased in the past few years.

Pork retail

The thousands of tons of pig meat that are produced are offered to the consumer in a variety of fresh and frozen pork products. Recently, customers are purchasing an increased amount of minced pork, pork ribs, and pork sausages, while other products, such as ready to cook and sous vide are most drastically falling out of favor with British shoppers. This could be explained by the comparatively high prices of such products. As of September 2023, ready to cook and sous vide pork products cost an average of 9.11 and 8.66 British pounds per kilogram, respectively. Minced pork, on the hand, cost just 5.1 British pounds per kilogram, potentially making it a more attractive option during the period of high food price inflation.
