Telecommunications industry in Hungary - statistics & facts

Telecommunication is increasingly becoming characterized by digital convergence, formerly unrelated technology is combined, and the lines between voice, data, and video are becoming increasingly blurred. Therefore, telecommunications service providers need to keep pace with continuous technological advancements and consumer demand. In Hungary, the telecommunications industry generated revenue worth over 4.6 billion U.S. dollars as of 2020, and by 2024 this figure is expected to increase to 4. 7 billion U.S. dollars.

Telecommunication companies

The mobile network market has been dominated by Magyar Telekom, the country’s most successful telecommunications company, which is also one of the first to launch commercial 5G services. Telenor Hungary and Vodafone are also significant mobile operators in Hungary, as in the last quarter of 2019 they accounted for approximately 27 percent of the mobile network market, respectively. DIGI Group also plays an important role in the Hungarian telecommunications industry. In the summer of 2020, the company accounted for 23 percent of fixed broadband internet subscriptions.

Fixed-line and mobile telephony

In recent years, both the mobile and the fixed-line telephony market have been characterized by Magyar Telekom’s overwhelming share. The popularity of landline telephony in Hungary has been following a decreasing trend which is also reflected in the lessening number of landline voice channels per 100 inhabitants. Moreover, the number of calls initiated from fixed lines in Hungary decreased by 35 percent between the 1st quarter of 2016 and the 2nd quarter of 2020. As for mobile telephony, by the end of 2019, over 11 million active SIM cards were registered in the country, which is more than Hungary’s population. At the same time, Hungarians seemingly preferred postpaid cards, their number reaching nine million over the past years.

Broadband and mobile internet

As internet usage is becoming an inevitable part of everyday life, it is no surprise that in 2020, 87 percent of Hungarian households had broadband internet access, which is a significant increase compared to 51 percent in 2010. When it comes to mobile internet, in 2020, the penetration rate reached 72 percent and is expected to increase to 80 percent by 2025. According to the findings of a survey conducted in 2019, Hungarians were overall more satisfied with the quality of mobile internet than with cable connections.
