Global grill and barbecue market- statistics & facts

Barbecuing has long been a popular way to enjoy food socially. Firing up the grill, barbie, or skottelbraai on a hot summer night is a popular pastime almost everywhere on the planet. People have been grilling meat, fish, and vegetables since the dawn of mankind, and studies show that this is not about to change. The global barbecue grill market is forecast to grow rapidly in the coming years. However, two recent developments are changing the BBQ market profoundly. Firstly, the pandemic put a great strain on social gatherings, meaning that barbecuing was enjoyed differently. People indicated that they grilled in smaller groups during the pandemic summers. In the meantime, the grill and roaster sales skyrocketed, which is in line with the retail sales increase in the wider domestic appliances and home furnishings industry. Secondly, meat alternatives are taking over on grills everywhere, caused by increased environmental concern and the better-for-you movement.

Grilling around the world

Although barbecuing is a global phenomenon, there are key regional differences in market size. Perhaps unsurprisingly, there is one market where the grill and barbecue industry is much larger than anywhere else in the world: the United States. The American grill and barbecue market was valued at 2.65 billion U.S. dollars in 2020 and is forecast to expand to 3.28 billion USD by 2025. In many other regions, most notably Western Europe and Asia, the barbecue market is already highly developed, while in others, the industry is still growing rapidly. South America and Eastern Europe are the two regions where the grill and BBQ market is enjoying the fastest growth.

Gas or charcoal?

Just as every country has its own local cuisine, barbecue food preferences also vary between regions. For instance, in the U.S, steak is the number one barbecue food. Aside from beef steak, Americans mostly prefer hamburgers, chicken, and ribs. Meanwhile, roughly 70 percent of German BBQ enthusiasts consider barbecue cooking to be incomplete without sausages, also known as Bratwürste. Although German consumers find beef steaks equally indispensable, they seem to prefer pork skewers and vegetables to chicken and ribs. Furthermore, there are transatlantic differences in grill preference as well. The majority of American grill owners have a gas grill, while in Europe, the classic charcoal grill is much more popular.
