Industry revenue of »retail sale in non-specialised stores with food« in Belgium 2011-2023

Belgium is one of the most expensive countries in Europe for grocery purchasing, owing to high taxation and excise duties on food products, which is one of the main reasons behind the food-retail sectors marginal growth. In 2017, food products in Belgian supermarkets cost on average 13.4 percent more than in Germany and nine percent more than in France. This has led to nearly a third of people traveling abroad to shop at foreign supermarkets chains such as Auchan, Jumbo and Lidl, according to the findings of GfK. In fact, in 2018, Belgian consumers purchased food products worth 616 million Euros from across the border, making an average of nine trips per year, with France and the Netherlands being a popular destination. Majority of them are particularly interested in buying beverages, as per the findings of a survey by Nielsen.

Moreover, since the past few years, online players have started chipping into their shares at a rapid pace, owing to their deep discounting strategies and robust last mile delivery services. In 2019, 11 percent of individuals purchased groceries online in Belgium, up five percentage points compared to 2015.
