Industry revenue of »retail sale in non-specialised stores with food« in Ireland 2011-2023

Growth in the number of supermarkets and retail stores, increasing demand for private label brands, better distribution processes and deep discounting strategies are some of the key reasons for the growth of food retail in non-specialised stores. Revenues are projected to grow from 17.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2016 to 22 billion U.S. dollars by 2023. The market is very concentrated, with the top five companies, Dunnes, SuperValu, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl accounting for nearly 90 percent of all revenue share. This has prevented various pure online players such as Ocado from entering the Irish market, which is one of the fastest growing in the UK.

Supermarkets post record sales amid Covid-19 outbreak

At a time where a majority of the industries are facing widening losses owing to the corona virus, Irish grocery stores are witnessing record sales. Consumers nationwide spent 2.8 billion Euros on groceries in the 12 weeks ending in March, which was an increase of 250 million Euros as compared to the same time last year. The top three stores, Dunnes, SuperValu and Tesco, all witnessed a 10 percent surge in the 12 weeks.
