With its population now closing in on 38 million, Poland is the largest market for food and drink in Central and Eastern Europe. Moreover, increasing disposable incomes and a strong economic outlook are factors that contribute to the overall attractiveness of the country’s food retail market, which is also the fourth largest sector in terms of the number of retail chains. Industry revenues concerning Poland’s food retail in non-specialized stores are expected to witness a moderate but steady growth over the period 2018 to 2023, increasing from 40.1 billion U.S. dollars to 42.4 billion U.S. dollars.

Discounters ruling the roost

Discounters have the largest market share in the Polish retail industry owing mainly to the price sensitivity of the consumers. Therefore it is no surprise that Jeronimo Martins/Biedronka was the largest retail chain in Poland in 2018 with revenues of 51.2 billion Zloty, followed by Eurocash, Lidl, Lewiatan and Auchan. Interestingly, as compared to other leading markets in the EU, Poland’s retail landscape is not completely dominated by the big players with the four largest players accounting for share of just over 30%. Comparatively, this number in the UK and France stands at around 70%.
