Industry revenue of retail sale in non-specialised stores with food in Romania 2011-2023

The Eurozone crisis had resulted in a slowdown in economic activities in Romania during 2008-2013. But in the period thereafter, the country has fought back well and is now exhibiting all symptoms of a healthy economy such as a low inflation rate and rising GDP, which is projected to value as much as 345 billion U.S. Dollars by 2024. Many industries have benefitted from the country’s growing economic power and one of them are non-specialised stores selling food and beverages. The industry has witnessed a steady rise over the years, with revenues expected to value 21 billion U.S. dollars in 2023, up from 18.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2018.

Beverage consumption on the rise

Over the years, the beverage industry has picked up steam in Romania with revenues of nearly 2.9 million U.S. Dollars in 2016. Wine, is among the most popular drinks in the country which has ranked amongst the top 15 leading wine consumers in the world, in 2018.

Hypermarkets/Supermarkets are the top choice

While the move towards the online channel in most industries including groceries, becoming a global phenomenon, people in Romania seem to be the odd one out, still relying heavily on brick and mortar stores. Romania accounted for a minute share of 0.3% percent of global online grocery stores, the least amongst all major EU countries. Unsurprisingly, supermarkets and hypermarkets are the most preferred choice amongst households when it comes to in store purchases.
