Industry revenue of »retail sale in non-specialised stores with food« in Slovenia 2011-2023

Slovenia is still reeling from the effects of the Eurozone crisis. Over the years, consumers have curtailed their discretionary spending and are investing mainly in durable goods. This is one of the key reasons why revenues from food retail in non-specialised stores are expected to only witness marginal growth, from 4.7 billion U.S. dollars in 2015 to 4.8 billion U.S. dollars by 2023. Additionally, online players are rapidly chipping away shares from brick and mortar retailers. P2C platforms such as Deliveroo, Ubereats and Foodpanda to name a few, are fast-gaining popularity with the consumers, owing to their prompt and free last mile delivery services. In 2019, 12 percent of individuals purchased food & groceries online. This has prompted some of the leading retailers in the country such as SPAR to adopt an omnichannel strategy.

Online sales surge amid Covid-19 virus outbreak

As the government has introduced strict lockdown measures owing to the outbreak of the corona virus, which include closure of majority of the brick and mortar stores, online food sales are witnessing a record surge. Online food delivery provider Ehrana has witnessed a 300 percent increase in orders over the past few weeks. Additionally, SPAR has launched a special online service offering 250 of the most essential food items, owing to the increased demand.
