Carbonated drinks account for the highest share
TheCarbonated soft drinks category currently accounts for the highest share among all soft drinks categories in the UK. Although the total volume of soft drink consumed remained stagnant over the last few years, thecorresponding value followed an upward trajectory, due to an increase in the average price of soft drinks. This has seemingly led to a decline in the yearly per capita consumption.
Coca Cola remains the undisputed leader
In 2018, Coca Cola emerged as the largest company in terms of sales through convenience channels, followed by Red Bull and Lucozade Energy. Moreover. the company retained its top position in terms of food service salesand those on licensed premises in the same year.
Private labels getting more market traction
In 2018, private label soft drinks had the highest grocery sales in the UK followed by established brands including Coca Cola and Pepsi. The same trend is prevalent in volume terms as well with private labels recording a higher number than the combined volume sales of other branded soft drinks sold in 2018.
Sugar tax on soft drinks gets a thumbs up
Consumers are gradually turning towards healthier options which has resulted in an increase in the share of diet soft drinks in the UK. Additionally, The UK Govt has also taken steps and levied a sugar tax to crack down on high sugar levels in soft drinks. Although, the move was highly supported by the general public, it also resulted in an increase in average base price per liter of soft drinks at major retailers.
