Apparel market overview
Driven by improving living standards, growing disposable income, and changing consumption habits, China’s apparel retail sales have been in an uptrend and were expected to grow further, albeit at a slower rate. Womenswear is the largest apparel sub-sector in China with the sales value of approximately one trillion yuan. However, sportswear and children’s wear are the fastest growing market segments, well above the total apparel market sales growth rate.
Children’s wear
Although children’s clothing accounted for only 12 percent of the total apparel market in China as of 2021, the sector is one of the most promising consumer goods markets. The double-digit growth of children’s apparel sales can be mainly attributed to the increasing per capita spending on childcare-related products rather than the implementation of two-child policy in China. Baby and toddler wear saw the greatest potential within the segment for obvious reasons of being more replaceable and purchased more frequently.
