Population of Belgium by gender 1846-2020 This graphic shows the population of Belgium from 1846 until 2020, by gender. From the beginning of this period the population grows at a consistent rate, until 1920 when it drops as a result of World War I, where Belgium was one of the focal points of military action, and many military personnel and civilians lost their lives. As we can see, both the male and female populations were heavily impacted as a result of this. (The same can be applied in regards to the Second World War, however the interval in available data is from 1930 and 1947, therefore the impact cannot be seen on this graph). The intervals between the data sets comes every 5 years from 1950 onwards, and from here we can see that Belgium's population grows at a relatively consistent rate. The gap in the number of men and women does widen, reaching it's biggest margin in 1980 with a gap of 230,000 people, however the gap then narrows to 110,000 in 2020, with a total of 5.74 million men and 5.85 million women.
