This statistic shows the percentage of cancer survivors and persons without a history of cancer who had a high health care out-of-pocket burden in the U.S. from 2011 to 2016, by ethnicity. During this time period around 2.2 percent of white cancer survivors stated they had a high health care out-of-pocket burden, compared to 1.2 percent of white persons without a history of cancer.

Cancer survivors were identified as persons who responded affirmatively to the MEPS question “Have you ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that you had cancer or a malignancy of any kind?”

High health care out-of-pocket burden was defined as having annual out-of-pocket expenditures on health care services >20% of annual family income. Predicted high out-of-pocket burden percentages from a logistic model controlling for age, sex, race/ethnicity, health insurance status, employment status, and number of conditions (excluding cancer).
