Video game type ranking video gaming South Korea 2020

In a survey conducted in South Korea in early 2020, gamers stated that they spent most of their time on casual single-player games, with a ranking of around 1.57 points on a scale from zero (never) to four (most often). This was closely followed by first-person shooters, with a ranking of around 1.47 points.

Mobile gaming

Around 9 out of 10 gamers in South Korea play games on their smartphones. Given the high smartphone penetration rate, it is not surprising that playing mobile games is widely popular in South Korea. The game industry in the homeland of smartphone giant Samsung is mostly focusing on mobile games. The biggest domestic game developer in 2019 was Netmarble, the company behind the mobile MMORPG Lineage 2: Revolution and Disney-licenced Marvel Future Fight. As of 2018, the sales revenue of the mobile gaming market was at around 6.7 trillion South Korean won and is estimated to grow even further.

Gaming culture

Mobile gaming is popular almost 6 out of 10 people of the general population aged between 10 and 65 years old and the mobile gaming eSport sector is growing, for example with games like Arena of Valor. Nevertheless, South Korean gaming culture evolved around PC gaming. In fact, it became so popular that PC bangs, a type of LAN gaming center formed from internet cafes and became a hotspot for gamers. PC gamers use those spaces to meet their peers and use the high-end computers provided to play games. As of March 2020, the most popular game based on total playtime in PC bangs was League of Legends.
