As of June 2022, 20 percent of adults with a family income between 50 and 100 thousand U.S. dollars indicated that they have ever received an unexpected out-of-network medical bill after receiving medical care. The No Surprises Act (NSA) went into effect from January 1, 2022, it protects patients from surprise medical bills under certain circumstances, making it illegal for out-of-network providers to charge patients more than the in-network cost-sharing amount.
