As of June 2022, 32 percent of adults in the U.S. who reported they had received unexpected medical bill, did so after lab work at an in-network health facility was sent to an out-of-network lab for assessment. Furthermore, 34 percent of adults who received a surprise or unexpected medical bill had it after a test or procedure that was not covered by their insurance.
The No Surprises Act (NSA) went into effect from January 1, 2022, it protects patients from surprise medical bills under certain circumstances, making it illegal for out-of-network providers to charge patients more than the in-network cost-sharing amount. This statistic shows the share of U.S. adults who have received a surprise medical bill since January 2022, by type of health service used.
