According to a survey on women's equality conducted by Ipsos in 2019, around 23 percent of respondents in Japan voiced that women's participation in sports was one of the areas that helped achieving the most progress in terms of gender equality in the country. Despite the success in the implementation of professional leagues for female athletes, the Japanese sports community continues to stress the exclusion of women from male-only sports such as sumo wrestling.
