JP Morgan Chase was the most systemically important bank globally as of March 2023, because it had a required level of additional capital buffer of 2.5 percent. This requirement was added in 2014 in response to the financial crisis which followed the bankruptcy filing of Lehman Brothers in 2008. The acquisition of Credit Suisse by UBS in March 2023 created Europe's largest G-SIB, and the fourth largest global G-SIB. The banks listed here are deemed to be essential to stability in the global banking sector, hence the additional requirements placed upon them. The buckets range in importance, with 5 being the most systemically important and 1 being the least.
