Share of children that actively commute to school across Ireland 2018
Pupils who walk or cycle to school have higher overall levels of physical activity, have better cardiorespiratory fitness, and are more likely to be physically active into adulthood.
In Northern Ireland 36 percent of primary and 18 percent of post primary school children reported walking or cycling to or from school. The share of children that actively commute to school in the ROI is much greater, where 42 percent of primary and 40 percent of post primary school children reported walking or cycling to or from school.
