Coronavirus daily cases in the Netherlands from February to May 2020

On May 28, 2020, the Dutch authorities reported 182 new confirmed cases of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the Netherlands. As of this day, with new cases being reported daily since February, the total number of confirmed cases in the Netherlands reached 45,950. Although these cases have been reported all over the country, most cases were found in Zuid-Holland. Officially, the coronavirus entered the Netherlands on the 27th of February 2020 after a Dutch resident returned from the Italian region of Lombardy. The second identified case in the country also concerned a Dutch resident who recently traveled to northern Italy.

Coronavirus across Benelux

In the Benelux, most cases were registered in the Netherlands and Belgium. However, Luxembourg was not left unscathed. Although the Netherlands is not considered to be an epicenter of the virus, rapid development took place in other European countries, most notably in Italy. Indeed, the first cases occurred in the Netherlands and Belgium in late February, whereas in Italy they appeared in late January.

Public concern in the Netherlands

According to a survey conducted in March 2020, half of the Dutch respondents believed too much attention was given to the coronavirus. However, the virus seemed to spread at an accelerated rate in the later days, jumping from 15 to 44 cases on the fifth of March 2020. Nonetheless, there is an undeniable concern in the Netherlands, and this can notably be seen in certain preventive behaviors that are currently being adopted in the country.
