In France, the average number of patients seen by a full-fledged active physician (APE) can be different depending on the type of medical specialty. In 2017, there were more than two thousand patients per cardiologist, and a little less than 400 patients per psychiatrist.

The source adds the following information: "Not included are healthcare professionals whose patients are atypical (abnormally low or abnormally high numbers). " and "an APE health professional is a health professional who has been working normally, over a full year, in the conventional setting. The following are therefore excluded from the group of APE health professionals:
- health professionals who have established themselves in the course of the year
- health care professionals who are not on contract
- health care professionals who are in full-time hospital practice
- healthcare professionals who reached age 65 during the fiscal year"
