Educational attainment of the population in Norway 2019

As of 2019, 37.1 percent of Norwegians had achieved an upper secondary education, representing the most common education level attained in the country. The Norwegian education system is divided into three levels: primary school, upper secondary school and higher education. While primary school is compulsory for everyone between six and 16 years, upper secondary school is an optional three-year long education, leading either to vocational- or higher education.

Increasingly educated population

Around 35 percent of Norwegians had completed a higher education of either three or five years in 2019, and higher educational attainment seems to be increasing among the population. Since 2009, the number of students in higher education increased on an annual basis, reaching over 296 thousand students in 2019. Most of the students were female and were enrolled at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in the city of Trondheim.

Education levels in Scandinavia

When considering the rest of Scandinavia, similar patterns appear. In both Sweden and Denmark, the population is gradually becoming more educated, and the number of students in higher education increased over the past decade. In 2018, approximately 23 percent of Swedes had studied three years or more, while nearly ten percent of Danes had completed a master’s degree in 2019.
