Between 2008 and 2020, the energy intensity of metallurgical alumina refining dropped significantly from some 15,550 megajoules per metric ton of alumina in 2008 to around 10,691 megajoules per metric ton of alumina in 2020. Once alumina has been refined from its ore it may be used to produce aluminum or as a product itself in electronics.
