Fluoride emission intensity of primary aluminum production by technology 2008-2018

There was a rapid reduction in fluoride emission intensity in Søderberg aluminum production between 2008 and 2018. Søderberg technology production had a mean emission intensity of around 3.7 kilograms of fluoride emitted per ton of aluminum produced in 2008. By 2018, it had decreased to approximately 1.8 kilograms of fluoride per ton of aluminum. Fluoride emissions from primary aluminum production include perfluorocarbons, powerful greenhouse gases, as well as hydrogen fluorides, which are harmful to plants.
