There was a rapid reduction in fluoride emission intensity in Søderberg aluminum production between 2008 and 2018, a trend which was interrupted by a 2019 increase. It had risen to approximately 2.22 kilograms of fluoride per ton of aluminum in 2020 before decreasing to 1.64 in 2021. Fluoride emissions from primary aluminum production include perfluorocarbons, powerful greenhouse gases, as well as hydrogen fluorides, which are harmful to plants.
