Nigeria: discrimination towards people with HIV

According to the results of a survey conducted in Nigeria in 2018, discriminatory attitudes towards people with HIV were widespread generally in the same measure among women and men. Specifically, some 51 percent of people declared that they would not buy vegetables from a shopkeeper or vendor with HIV. Similarly, roughly 47 percent of individuals believed that children with HIV should not attend school with children without HIV.
Data show that there were several misconceptions about the transmission of HIV. The most common ones were that the viruses can be transmitted by mosquito bites or by sharing food with an infected person.

Respondents with discriminatory attitudes towards people living with HIV are those who say that they would not buy fresh vegetables from a shopkeeper or vendor if they knew that person had HIV or who say that children living with HIV should not be allowed to attend school with children who do not have HIV.
