As of 2019, Mauritius, Tunisia and South Africa were considered most prepared to support online shopping in Africa. This according to the UNCTAD B2C E-commcerce Index, which measures the economy's readiness for shopping online in a country based on four categories (internet usage, security, account ownership, and postal reliability). Mauritius reached an index value of 68.4 percent, scoring highest at the account ownership and secure internet servers. Tunisia had a value of 58.1, whereas South Africa had a B2C E-commerce index value of 54.4, which made it the 76th country in the world.

The index value is ranked from 0 to 100, with 100 indicating the highest readiness and 0 indicating the lowest.
