Online purchases surged during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in China. According to a survey on Chinese online shopping behavior conducted by Rakuten Insight in May 2020, about 57 percent of respondents said that they shopped more online during the pandemic. The most commonly purchased items were food and groceries and personal hygiene products such as toilet paper and masks.

338 respondents aged 35 to 44 years,

75 respondents aged 55 years and older.
