Faced with the inability to buy or have physical books delivered during the confinement period due to the coronavirus outbreak in France, the French have turned overwhelmingly to e-books. In the e-reader market game, the French brands Fnac and Rakuten (formerly Prime Minister), were on the rise with. Fnac started out at 16 percent market share in March 2020, almost doubling in May. Amazon's share however, fell from 76 in March to 60 percent in April and May 2020.
