In 2019, acute respiratory infections were estimated to affect almost 24 million people in Mexico, making them the most common illness in the country. Intestinal infections were the second most frequent ailment that year, with over 5 million estimated cases.
Risk factors
Several factors can cause respiratory infections; however, they can be exacerbated by activities such as smoking in patients with pre-existing health conditions. Though the smoker population in Mexico has generally declined in the last decade, figures still stand as high as 12.4 million in 2020, and were projected to reach nearly 12.6 million by 2025.
Also a heart problem
Smoking can also have detrimental effects on heart health. The leading cause of death in Mexico in 2020 was heart conditions, with 171,000 deaths recorded. Demand for lifesaving transplants has also risen as a result. In 2019, 43 patients were placed on the heart transplant waiting list in the North American country, and 32 transplants were performed.
