Ghana: number of teachers in secondary education 2010-2020

At the secondary education level in Ghana, there were 187,914 official teachers in 2020. This represented a significant increase in the number of secondary school teaching personnel, compared to the previous year which had registered around 16.7 thousand teachers.

On the whole, the number of teaching staff at this stage of education has increased over the past years, but more significantly since 2017. Reasons for the significant increase may include Ghana's 2018 self-wean from the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) net hiring freeze conditionality, which allows the government to extensively hire new staff for the the public sector.

The source explains that teachers considered here are "Persons employed full-time or part-time in an official capacity to guide and direct the learning experience of pupils and students, irrespective of their qualifications or the delivery mechanism, i.e. face-to-face and/or at a distance".

It also mentions that it "excludes educational personnel who have no active teaching duties or who work occasionally or in a voluntary capacity in educational institutions".
