The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic had a major impact on travel and tourism throughout Europe, with overall international tourist arrivals falling by 97 percent in April 2020 over the same month of 2019. Travel to and from countries was restricted as the virus spread, resulting in a sharp drop in arrivals across the region. As of September 2021, international tourist arrivals rose over the previous year, reaching around 38 million. However, this figure was still far below pre-pandemic levels.
