CO2 emissions related to energy in India 1971-2019

India's energy-related carbon dioxide emissions totaled nearly 2.4 billion metric tons in 2019, almost the same value compared to the previous year. The sources of electricity production such as coal, oil, and natural gas have been the most significant GHG emissions source.

Global CO2 emissions from the energy sector

In 2019, global energy-related carbon dioxide emissions totaled 36.1 billion metric tons and saw a dramatic reduction in emissions in 2020. This was primarily caused by the outbreak of COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns and restrictions imposed worldwide during 2020. As one of the largest polluters, India has pledged to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 and has already procured billions of U.S dollars as renewable energy investments.

India is the world’s third-largest energy-consuming nation, with energy demand increasing annually due to improving the economic conditions of its citizens. In the financial year 2021, the industrial sector was estimated to be the largest electricity consumer in India, followed by the domestic sector.
