Slightly more than half of the 254,681 registered voters in the parliamentary election in Iceland in 2021 were women. Since 2013, the total number of registered voters in Iceland has increased. The Icelandic Parliament (Althing) is usually elected every four years, but elections were held both in 2016 and 2017 due to political scandals.

The Icelandic Parliament (Althing) is elected every four years. There are 63 seats in the Icelandic Parliament, distributed in accordance with a method known as proportional representation. The system guarantees that political parties gain seats in the parliament in proportion to the number of votes cast for them throughout the country. There were elections in Iceland in both 2016 and 2017 due to political protests and scandals, among others related to the Panama Papers.
