State motor fuel tax rates have steadily increased between 2001 and 2020, with gasoline having a national average of 28.09 cents to the gallon in 2020. Diesel averaged 29.6 cents to the gallon that same year.
In 2020, Pennsylvania was the state recording the highest State motor fuel tax rates, at 74 cents per gallons of diesel and 58 cents per gallon of gasoline. Indiana came second for the highest diesel tax rates, at 52 cents per gallon, while California reported the second most elevated gasoline tax rate at 51 cents per gallon.
