Global primary forest size 1990-2020
As of 2020, the primary forest area across the globe measured some 1.11 billion hectares. This figure represents a loss of roughly seven percent in comparison to the 1.19 billion hectares of primary forest that covered the world in 1990. Nevertheless, the rate of loss more than halved in the last decade when compared to previous years. Primary forests are those without significant disturbance of the ecological processes and no apparent indications of human activity. By comparison, total global forest area was 4.06 billion hectares as of 2020.
