In 2021, the land area of private timber plantation companies in Indonesia was 7.26 million hectares. Most of private timber plantation companies are on Sumatra Island. Private-sector-run forestry plantations in Indonesia are known as industrial plantation forests, or Hutan Tanaman Industri (HTI). There is a distinction made between timber concessions whose primary purpose is to harvest natural forests and those whose goal is to establish timber and pulp plantations.
