Power plant mercury emissions in the U.S. 2022-2023, by facility
The Oak Grove Power Plant in North Dakota emitted more mercury (Hg) than any other U.S. power plant in 2023, at 298 pounds. Mercury is a neurotoxin and an environmental pollutant that can have significant health impacts on humans. In 2012, the Obama administration imposed rules that limited emissions of mercury from coal-fired power plant smokestacks, but this was reversed by the Trump administration in 2021. The rules were then reestablished in 2023 by the Biden administration.
