In a survey conducted in 2021, about 15.7 percent of the respondents in Japan reported spending up to 20 thousand Japanese yen on personal shopping per month using credit cards. Around 20.1 percent of cardholders did not use their credit cards to pay for personal purchases.

Original question: 'How much money do you spend using credit cards for personal shopping per month? If you have more than one credit card, please state the total amount. If you do not use credit cards for personal shopping, please select 'do not use'.'
Respondents were asked to choose between face-to-face interviews and postal retrieval of surveys. The source used a stratified two-stage random sampling method.
Figures may not add up to 100 percent due to rounding by the source. 100 Japanese yen equal 0.74 U.S. dollars or 0.70 euros as of December 2022.
