Recycling targets for packaging waste in the EU-27 2025-2030, by type
Under the European Commission's Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive, at least 65 percent of all packaging waste must be recycled by 31 December, 2025, and at least 70 percent percent by 31, December 2030.
The recycling targets to be achieved vary by material type. For example, by 2030, at least 80 percent by weight of ferrous metal packaging must be recycled, while the target for paper and cardboard is 8 percent. In contrast, at least 55 percent of all plastic packaging must be recycled by 2030. Under the EU's Circular Economy Action Plan, the EU aims to ensure all packaging is reusable or recyclable in an economically viable way by 2030.
