From 2020 to 2023, the share of online meal shoppers fluctuated in the Netherlands. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic contributed to the rise of the food delivery industry. However, after consumers could dine in-person again, the share of e-commerce shoppers declined. Being better served by delivery companies, consumers from densely populated areas ordered online the most. In 2023, roughly half of Dutch respondents living in extremely metropolitan areas reported having bought meals online.
