Share of electricity generation in the UK 1990-2021, by source

In 2021, low-carbon energy sources accounted for almost 60 percent of the electricity generated in the United Kingdom, while gas was responsible for 40 percent of the electricity production of the country and coal for a mere two percent share. Electricity from coal made up the largest share of the UK's electricity mix until the end of the 1990s, when gas took over. Low-carbon electricity sources started to grow in the 2010s and went from a 20 percent share to 62 percent of the country's electricity mix in 2020.
In 2021, wind and solar energy sources accounted for roughly 25 percent of the power supply of the country, while nuclear energy supplied another 15 percent of the electricity mix.
