Global CO2 emissions of buildings and construction

The operation of residential buildings worldwide generated more carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions than any other segment in the real estate and construction sectors in 2022. Nevertheless, most of those CO₂ emissions were indirect, which means that they were not generated directly in home buildings, but they were released by the energy sector to provide them with electricity and heat. The construction of buildings generated more CO₂ emissions than other construction activities, such as infrastructure.
