MENA: children’s climate risk index by country 2021

In 2021, Sudan and Yemen had the highest climate change risk index in the Middle East and North Africa region, at 7.6 and 7.4, respectively. Saudi Arabia had the highest CCRI amongst Gulf Cooperation Council countries, at 4.7. GCC countries had a CCRI of 3.3 or below which was the lowest in the region.

Climate Change Risk Index (CCRI): Is a composite index used by UNICEF to assess the risk of environmental shocks and stresses related to climate change that amplify child impoverishment and/or humanitarian crises. It covers both the risk of being exposed to climate shocks and the vulnerability of children to such shocks.

CCRI ranges from 1 to 8.6, with a CCRI of 1 being the lowest risk for children with respect to climate change whereas a CCRI of 8.7, has the highest risk for children.
