China and India saw the biggest annual growth in CO₂ emissions from coal combustion in 2023, with an increase of 393 and 148 million metric tons of carbon dioxide (MtCO₂), respectively. Global coal emissions were partially offset by declines in regions like the United States, the European Union, Japan, and other advanced economies (AE).
