Supplementary notes

King County is the largest county in Washington State and includes the city of Seattle as well the surrounding area. A list of the cities, towns and unincorporated areas of King County can be found here.

The source used data from the King County Medical Examiner’s Office (KCMEO) to determine the number of deaths among those presumed to be homeless. Individuals were considered homeless if they were recorded as having "no fixed address" in the KCMEO database.

"The Medical Examiner’s Office investigated the deaths of 26,3364 individuals between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2021. Approximately 5% (n=1,429) were presumed to be homeless."

The majority of deaths over this period occurred in Seattle (1,000; 70%).
