Leading European airlines based on revenue 2019

In 2019, the German airline, Lufthansa Group generated over 40 billion U.S. dollars in revenue, making it the leading airline group in Europe. In that same year, Air France – KLM followed the Lufthansa Group with 30.5 billion U.S. dollars.

Lufthansa Group

Lufthansa Group was founded in 1953. It is the flag carrier and the largest German. The group owns Lufthansa German Airlines, Eurowings, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa Cargo with a total group fleet consisting of 763 aircraft at the end of 2019. The number of passengers transported by Lufthansa Group went up from roughly 71 million passengers in 2008 to over 145 million passengers in 2019. Consequently, during the past 15 years, the revenue of Lufthansa Group more than doubled, up from 17 billion euros in 2004 to 36.4 billion euros in 2019. On the other hand, the operating profit of Lufthansa Group increased at a more rapid pace, up from 0.4 billion euros in 2004 to 1.7 billion euros in 2019.

European aviation industry

The aviation industry performs as a facilitator in the European economy, carrying and connecting millions of passengers throughout the region every year. In addition to Lufthansa and Air France – KLM, other leading airline groups in Europe include, for instance, International Airlines Group, Turkish Airlines, Ryanair, and so on. Passenger capacity and traffic of Europe-based commercial airlines increased progressively between 2013 and 2020. Therefore, commercial airlines in Europe are quite profitable, increasing from one billion U.S. dollars in 2013 to almost eight billion U.S. dollars in 2020, indicating the growing size of the aviation market in Europe. Concerning the environmental footprint of the aviation industry, due to differences in fleet structure, fuel efficiency and cutting-edge maintenance of aircraft each airline emit a varying level of pollutants into the atmosphere. Ranking European airlines by carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, Wizz Air was the least environmental polluting airline in Europe, with 58.5 grams CO2 per passenger-kilometer as of 2019.
